St. Matthew Cemetery Annex History
St. Matthew Lutheran Church owns three cemeteries in Lemont. The original cemetery is located on 127th Street in Lemont with the earliest known burials dating back to 1852. We also own the Old Fellows Cemetery immediately to the east of our cemetery which dates back to 1876. Finally, there is the Danish Cemetery which is located across 127th Street and our records show it was deeded in 1892. The cemetery wall is made from native Lemont stone. Some say the stone was left over from the building of the new church, but no record exists to indicate when the wall was built. The iron rings on top of the wall were used for hitching the horses.

Cemetery lots originally sold for $25 per lot and the lots were maintained by the lot owners. In 1930, a program of perpetual care was adopted. Each lot owner was asked to contribute $100 to be put in a trust fund. The revenue from this fund was to pay the sexton for cutting the grass and keeping the lots in order. St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran (churchyard) enters its third century of service and honor to the pioneers who worked fervently to establish our church in Lemont.

St. Matthew has graves available in the church cemetery. The cost for each grave is $450 for members and $700 for non-members.

St. Matthew also owns approximately 90 graves at Mt. Vernon Cemetery located on Route 171 near Cog Hill Golf Course.
